ART AVODAH

Assorted Quotes

The following are titles to previous works of art and the quotes, which inspired them.  Most have been sold, and all are no longer available.  But they might at least shed a little more light on why I believe what I do.

The Last
“My thoughts and feelings seem to be getting more and more like those of the Old Testament, and in recent months I have been reading the Old Testament much more than the New.  In my opinion it is not Christian to want to take our thoughts and feelings too quickly and too directly from the New Testament.  We have already talked about this several times, and every day confirms my opinion.  One cannot and must not speak the last word before the last but one.

A Fine Belief to Die In
“For Christianity is a fine belief to die in, the only true comfort, and the moment of death is the appropriate situation for Christianity.  Perhaps it is for this reason that even the lukewarm will not give it up; for just as one deposits something in a burial society so as to be able to when one’s time comes to be able to defray the costs, so does one keep Christianity treasured up until the last: one is a Christian, but becomes such only at the moment of death”

Soren Kierkegaard
Concluding Unscientific Postscript

Correspondence with Reality
“One must risk looking into the immediate future; one must devote earnest thought to the consequences of one’s own actions; and one must endeavor to examine one’s own motives and one’s own heart.  One’s task is not to turn the world upside-down, but to do what is necessary at the given place and with a due consideration of reality.”

Afterwards
“For those millions who upon their knees made the pilgrimage to His grave, the human crowd which no power was able to disperse: only one thing was needed, that Christ should come again—and all these million would at once acquire feet and take to their heels, the whole crowd would be as if blown away; or perhaps as a mass would stand upright and fall upon Christ to put him to death.”

Soren Kierkegaard
ATTACK UPON CHRISTENDOM

Meditations Part I

“All things are woven together and the common bond is sacred, and scarcely one thing is foreign to another, for they have been arranged together in their places and together make the same ordered universe.  For there is one universe out of all, one God through all, one substance and one law, one common reason of all intelligent creatures and one truth, if indeed the perfection of creatures of the same family and partaking of the same reason is one.”

Marcus Aurelius
MEDITATIONS

1st Discourse (1996) - mixed media - [8 x 10 inches]

"For what effect this true discourse will produce depends solely upon who the hearer is. There may perhaps have been one in whom this discourse inspires such a dread as he never before has known; but this is not the fault of the discourse, it lies in the hearer. It is not the discourse which has terrified the one, and it is not the discourse which has tranquilized the other; it is the one and the other who in this discourse have understood themselves."

2nd Discourse (1996) - mixed media - [8x10 inches]

"When once affliction has attained what eternity wants of it, the situation adjusts itself properly ; for though the pressure remains, it constantly makes itself known conversely as hope, converts itself into hope. Him only can affliction depress who will not be helped eternally ; him who wills this, affliction presses upward."

3rd Discourse (1996) - mixed media - [8 x 10 inches]

"Only Omnipotence is able to withdraw (take itself back) in giving out, and it is this relationship precisely which constitutes the independence of the recipient. Hence God’s omnipotence is his goodness. For goodness means to give out completely, but in such wise that by withdrawing it makes the recipient free."

Another day in a life (1980) - mixed media - [ 11 x 16 inches ]

"Reflection is not the evil; but a reflective condition and the deadlock which it involves, by transforming the capacity for action into a means of escape from action, is both corrupt and dangerous, and leads in the end to a retrograde movement."

S.KIERKEGAARD
"This Present Age"

Dionysius the Areopagite (1986) - mixed media - [ 16 x 20 ]

"My thoughts and feelings seem to be getting more and more like those of the Old Testament, and in recent months I have been reading the Old Testament much more than the New. ....In my opinion it is not Christian to want to take our thoughts and feelings too quickly and too directly from the New Testament. We have already talked about this several times, and every day confirms my opinion. One cannot and must not speak the last word before the last but one."

I Had a Friend Once (1985) - acrylic - [ 30 x 40 inches ]

"Your life would have been quite different, easier, clearer, simpler had not our paths crossed a year ago. But there are only short moments when this thought bothers me, I believe that not only I, but you too, had to meet, neither of us basically has any desire for an easy life, much as we may enjoy beautiful and happy hours in this life, and much as we may have a great longing for these hours today. I believe that happiness lies for both of us at a different and hidden place which is incomprehensible to many."
